Background of the Study
Mentoring is an essential aspect of employee development, involving experienced employees (mentors) guiding and supporting less experienced employees (mentees) to enhance their skills and career development (Adepoju & Olaniran, 2023). Mentoring programs are designed to transfer knowledge, provide career guidance, and help employees navigate organizational challenges (Ogunyemi & Ayodele, 2024). In the cement manufacturing industry, where skill development is crucial for operational efficiency and innovation, mentoring can play a pivotal role in shaping a competent workforce.
Lafarge Cement, a leading cement manufacturer with operations in Kaduna State, has implemented mentoring programs as part of its employee development strategy. Given the complexity of the cement manufacturing process and the need for a highly skilled workforce, assessing the effectiveness of these mentoring programs in enhancing employee skills is crucial for Lafarge Cement’s continued success (Muhammad & Idris, 2024). This study aims to explore how mentoring programs influence employee development at Lafarge Cement, with a particular focus on the effectiveness of the programs in improving employee performance, skills, and career growth in Kaduna State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread adoption of mentoring programs in various sectors, the effectiveness of these programs in employee development, particularly in the manufacturing industry, remains under-explored (Adebayo & Chidi, 2023). At Lafarge Cement in Kaduna State, there is limited research on how these mentoring initiatives contribute to the development of employees' skills and overall performance. Without a thorough evaluation, the company may miss opportunities to optimize its mentoring strategies and better support the growth of its employees (Durojaiye & Ajiboye, 2023).
